Weather in January
Warm and mostly dry. Part of the second dry season. Mornings can be cool in the highlands around Bwindi (15°C), warming to 25–27°C by midday. Occasional brief afternoon showers possible but rarely disruptive.
Trail Conditions
Firm and dry. January trails are in good condition with minimal mud. This is one of the most comfortable months for trekking — good footing, clear paths, and less slippery vegetation.
Pros
- Dry, warm weather — comfortable trekking conditions
- Clear skies — excellent for photography
- Crowds decrease after the first week
- Gorillas often at lower altitudes — potentially shorter treks
- Lodge prices return to standard rates
Cons
- First week can still be busy (holiday season spillover)
- Some popular lodges may be fully booked for early January
- Permits for the first 2 weeks should be booked in advance
Wildlife Highlight
Clear skies make January excellent for photography. Migratory birds are still present. Gorilla families tend to stay at lower altitudes in dry weather, potentially shortening trek times.
Permit Availability
Moderate. Early January is still busy from holiday bookings. From mid-January onwards, permits become easier to obtain. Book 2–3 months ahead to be safe.
Prices
Medium. Lodge prices return to standard rates after the holiday premium (December). Good value compared to peak months (July–August).
Insider Tip
Aim for the second half of January. The holiday crowds are gone, the weather is still perfect, and permits are easier to get. It is one of the best-kept secrets for gorilla trekking.
