Kidepo Valley National Park

Africa's last true wilderness frontier — vast savannas, dramatic mountains and wildlife you won't find anywhere else in Uganda.

Kidepo Valley National Park is widely regarded as one of Africa's finest wilderness areas. Located in Uganda's remote northeastern corner, bordering South Sudan and Kenya, the park covers 1,442 square kilometers of open savanna framed by rugged mountain ranges. Its remoteness has kept it virtually untouched by mass tourism, preserving an authentic wild African landscape. Two seasonal rivers — the Kidepo and the Narus — create natural gathering points for wildlife, offering some of the most concentrated game viewing in East Africa.

Why Visit Kidepo Valley National Park

  • Experience Africa's last true wilderness — vast plains, dramatic mountains and virtually no other tourists.
  • See wildlife found nowhere else in Uganda: ostriches, cheetahs, bat-eared foxes, aardwolves and striped hyenas.
  • Watch massive buffalo herds of up to 15,000 animals gather in the Narus Valley during dry season.
  • Meet the Karamojong pastoralists and the Ik hunter-gatherers — two of Africa's most fascinating indigenous cultures.

What to See

  • Lions, elephants, Rothschild's giraffes and large buffalo herds on game drives through the Narus Valley.
  • Uganda's only wild ostriches and other rare species like cheetah and striped hyena.
  • Dramatic mountain scenery — the Morungole, Zulia and Napore ranges surrounding the valley.
  • Karamojong manyattas (traditional homesteads) and the unique culture of northeastern Uganda.

Best Time to Visit

The dry season from December to March is the best time for game viewing, when animals concentrate around the Narus Valley water sources. June to September is also good. The wet season brings green landscapes and excellent birding with over 475 species recorded.
