As someone who has lived in Buhoma near Bwindi Impenetrable National Park for most of my life, I can tell you this: there is no bad time to visit Uganda. However, different seasons offer different experiences. This guide will help you choose the best time for your priorities — whether that is dry trekking trails, fewer crowds, lower prices, or the best wildlife viewing.
Quick Summary: Uganda's Seasons
| Season | Months | Weather | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dry Season 1 | June – September | Warm, mostly dry | Gorilla trekking, game viewing, peak season |
| Wet Season 1 | October – November | Short rains, green | Fewer crowds, lower prices, birding |
| Dry Season 2 | December – February | Warm, dry | Gorilla trekking, holidays, clear skies |
| Wet Season 2 | March – May | Heavy rains | Lowest prices, lush scenery, challenging trails |
Dry Season: June – September (Peak)
This is Uganda's most popular travel season. Trails in Bwindi are drier and firmer, making gorilla trekking more comfortable. Animals in savanna parks like Queen Elizabeth gather around water sources, making them easier to spot. Days are warm (25–28°C) with occasional afternoon showers.
- Best trekking conditions — drier trails, less mud
- Excellent wildlife viewing in Queen Elizabeth and Murchison Falls
- Most popular with tourists — book permits and lodges early
- Prices are at their highest
- July and August are peak months — book 6 months ahead
Short Rains: October – November
The short rainy season brings afternoon showers but rarely all-day rain. This is an underrated time to visit. Trails are muddier, but the forest is lush and green, and you will share it with fewer people. Permits and lodges are easier to get.
- Fewer tourists — more intimate trekking experience
- Lower prices at most lodges (10–30% off peak rates)
- Easier permit availability
- Excellent for birdwatching — migratory species arrive
- Trails are muddier — good boots and gaiters help
Tip
The short rains (October–November) are our insider recommendation. You get the same gorilla experience at lower prices with fewer people. The rain usually comes in the afternoon, and treks start early morning.
Dry Season: December – February
The second dry season is warm and pleasant. Christmas and New Year are popular times for gorilla trekking, so permits sell out early. January and February are quieter and offer excellent conditions.
- Warm and dry — great trekking and safari conditions
- December is busy (holiday travel) — book early
- January–February offer a perfect sweet spot: dry weather, fewer crowds
- Clear skies for photography
Long Rains: March – May
This is the wettest season and the least popular for tourism. Trails in Bwindi are at their muddiest, and heavy afternoon rains are common. However, the forest is at its most beautiful — lush, green and alive. Prices are at their lowest.
- Lowest prices of the year — best budget option
- The forest is incredibly green and photogenic
- Trails are very muddy and slippery — strong boots essential
- Some remote roads can be difficult
- Gorilla trekking still runs every day regardless of rain
Info
Important: gorilla trekking operates every day of the year. Rain does not cancel treks. The gorillas live in the rainforest — rain is their natural environment.
