How long does it take to climb Mount Elgon?

A trek to Wagagai Peak typically takes 4 to 5 days via the Sasa Trail or Sipi Trail. Shorter hikes of 1 to 2 days are available to explore waterfalls, caves and lower slopes. The Sipi Falls area can be visited as a day trip from the nearby town of Mbale.

What are the Sipi Falls?

Sipi Falls is a series of three waterfalls on the western slopes of Mount Elgon near the town of Kapchorwa. The main fall drops about 100 meters. Visitors can hike between all three falls in half a day, crossing coffee farms, bridges and viewpoints along the way.

Is Mount Elgon good for beginners?

Mount Elgon is more accessible than the Rwenzori Mountains and better suited for less experienced trekkers. The trails are well-maintained, altitudes are lower, and the pace is gentler. The Sipi Falls area requires no special fitness at all.

Mount Elgon is an extinct volcano straddling the Uganda-Kenya border in eastern Uganda. The national park covers 1,121 square kilometers and rises to 4,321 meters at Wagagai Peak. The nearby Sipi Falls — a series of three stunning waterfalls on the mountain's western slopes — are among Uganda's most beautiful natural sights. The region is also the heartland of Uganda's Arabica coffee production.

Best Time to Visit
