Kazinga Channel

A natural channel connecting Lake Edward and Lake George, teeming with hippos, elephants and birds.

The Kazinga Channel is a 32-kilometer natural waterway that connects Lake Edward and Lake George in Queen Elizabeth National Park. It is one of Uganda's top wildlife viewing spots, particularly for large concentrations of hippos, elephants and waterbirds. A boat cruise along the channel is one of the most popular and rewarding activities in the park.

Why Visit Kazinga Channel

  • Take a scenic boat cruise for close-up views of hippos, elephants, buffalo and crocodiles on the shoreline.
  • Enjoy exceptional bird watching with hundreds of species including pelicans, cormorants, kingfishers and the African fish eagle.
  • Experience wildlife from the water — a unique and relaxing perspective different from a game drive.
  • Sunset cruises offer particularly magical light and wildlife activity.

What to See

  • Large pods of hippos — the Kazinga Channel has one of the highest hippo concentrations in Africa.
  • Elephants, buffalo and warthogs coming to drink and bathe along the shore.
  • Hundreds of bird species along the banks, including pelicans, herons, storks and eagles.
  • Nile monitors, crocodiles and various fish species in and around the water.

Best Time to Visit

The Kazinga Channel can be visited year-round. The dry season concentrates more animals along the waterway. Afternoon cruises tend to offer the best wildlife viewing and light for photography.
