Rwenzori Mountains National Park

The legendary Mountains of the Moon — Africa's third-highest peak, glacial lakes and otherworldly giant vegetation.

The Rwenzori Mountains, often called the Mountains of the Moon, rise to 5,109 meters in western Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Unlike most of Africa's famous peaks, the Rwenzoris are not volcanic — they are a tectonic block mountain range, unique on the continent. The national park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, protects 996 square kilometers of some of the most extraordinary mountain ecosystems on Earth: from tropical rainforest through bamboo and heather zones to surreal alpine landscapes of giant lobelias and groundsels found nowhere else.

Why Visit Rwenzori Mountains National Park

  • Summit Margherita Peak (5,109 m) — Africa's third-highest point and one of the continent's greatest mountain challenges.
  • Trek through unique alpine vegetation zones with giant lobelias, groundsels and heather that grow meters tall.
  • Explore a UNESCO World Heritage Site with one of Africa's highest concentrations of endemic species.
  • Experience cultural encounters with the Bakonzo people who have lived at the foot of the mountains for centuries.

What to See

  • Margherita Peak — the snow-capped summit of Mount Stanley, Africa's third-highest point.
  • Giant vegetation — lobelias, groundsels and heather that create an otherworldly alpine landscape.
  • Glacial lakes, waterfalls and rivers in the high valleys between the mountain peaks.
  • Over 70 mammal species and 217 bird species, including 19 Albertine Rift endemics.

Best Time to Visit

The drier months of June to August and December to February are the best for trekking, though the Rwenzoris can be wet at any time. The full summit circuit takes 7 to 9 days. Shorter treks of 3 to 4 days are also available for lower elevations.

How Misty Gorilla Expeditions Can Help

We organize Rwenzori trekking expeditions including permits, experienced mountain guides, porters, equipment and accommodation in mountain huts. We can combine a Rwenzori trek with gorilla trekking in Bwindi or wildlife safaris in Queen Elizabeth National Park.
