We had packed two big suitcases with clothes and toys for the orphanage near Bwindi. Fifteen children sleep there every night, and during the day up to fifty come through. The project is supported by Hope on the Road (hopeontheroad.org) — a German non-profit that works directly with communities in western Uganda.
A BodaBoda picks up the delivery
When we arrived, a BodaBoda rider was already waiting. BodaBodas are the motorcycle taxis that keep Uganda moving — they carry people, furniture, livestock, and apparently two oversized suitcases without breaking a sweat. The rider strapped both cases onto the back of his bike, adjusted the load once, and was ready to go.
Nothing tipped over. Nothing fell off. That's the thing about Uganda — what looks impossible to an outsider is just Tuesday for the locals. These riders transport almost anything on their BodaBodas, and they do it with a calm confidence that comes from years of practice on dirt roads and steep hills.

The orphanage near Bwindi houses 15 children overnight and serves up to 50 during the day. It's supported by Hope on the Road (hopeontheroad.org), a German non-profit focused on community projects in western Uganda.
Why this matters for travelers
If you're coming to Uganda for gorilla trekking, you're already traveling to one of the most remote and beautiful corners of East Africa. Bringing a few extra kilos of clothes or school supplies in your suitcase is easy — and it makes a real difference. We can connect you with the orphanage or other community projects so your contribution goes exactly where it's needed.
Travel Tip
Traveling to Bwindi? Leave some space in your suitcase. We'll help you bring supplies directly to a community project — no middlemen, no administration.
